Orientation Workshop for Newly Joined Parents

Mathavam organized a one-day orientation workshop on 5th July 2025 for newly joined parents of children attending the center. The program aimed to provide an overview of the services available at Mathavam and to help parents better understand the multidisciplinary approaches used in managing neurodevelopmental disorders.

The workshop commenced with a brief welcome and introduction by the administrative staff, outlining the objectives of the session and the structure of the day’s program. The workshop featured key sessions delivered by the Medical Officer In-charge, the Behaviour Therapist, the Physical Therapist, and the Speech Therapist at Mathavam, each sharing their expertise relevant to supporting children with neurodevelopmental disorders. A particularly impactful moment during the workshop was when a parent shared the heartfelt journey of her autistic child. Her personal experiences, challenges, and progress deeply resonated with the audience, offering both encouragement and insight to other parents and participants.

The sessions encouraged active participation from parents, many of whom shared their concerns and experiences, leading to a collaborative learning environment. Notably, medical students from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, who were visiting Mathavam for their professorial psychiatry rotation, also attended the workshop and engaged with both parents and professionals, gaining valuable exposure to interdisciplinary care in a community setting.
